UK slams Israel for detaining two British Lawmakers, says action is unacceptable

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has condemned the Israeli government after two Labour Party Members of Parliament, Yuan Yang and Abtisam Mohamed, were denied entry and deported upon arrival in Israel.

The Lawmakers, who were part of a parliamentary delegation from London, were detained by Israeli authorities and subsequently deported without entry into the country.

In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, April 5, 2025, Lammy described the incident as “unacceptable, counterproductive, and deeply concerning,” insisting that such treatment was inappropriate for elected representatives of the British government.

“It is unacceptable, counterproductive, and deeply concerning that two British MPs on a parliamentary delegation to Israel have been detained and refused entry by the Israeli authorities,” Lammy said.

He added that he had directly contacted Israeli officials to express the UK government’s disapproval and had offered full support to the affected lawmakers.

Lammy reiterated that the UK remains committed to securing an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, facilitating hostage negotiations, and pushing for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Tensions have been escalating since the collapse of a brief truce last month, with Israel intensifying military strikes in Gaza in an attempt to reclaim ground and pressure Hamas into releasing hostages.

According to the Gaza health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, 1,249 people have been killed in the recent wave of Israeli offensives, pushing the total death toll to 50,609 since the war broke out.

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, following a deadly Hamas attack on Israel, which left 1,218 people dead, most of whom were civilians, based on Israeli official figures.
