Labour Party: Gov. Otti, Peter Obi, Usman meet INEC over Leadership crisis

A high-level delegation of the Labour Party (LP) led by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, met with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday to address ongoing developments within the party following a Supreme Court ruling.

The delegation included LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; the Acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman; the Edo State governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata; and several members of the National Assembly.

According to a statement posted on INEC’s official X handle, the meeting was held to discuss recent party developments, particularly those that have arisen since the Supreme Court nullified the leadership of Julius Abure’s National Executive Committee.

Governor Otti presented INEC with a Certified True Copy of the court judgment, reaffirming the party’s readiness to align with the court’s decision and restructure its leadership accordingly.

He explained that the visit aimed to ensure clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment between the party and the electoral body.

INEC’s Acting Chairman, Sam Olumekun, received the delegation in the absence of the Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who is currently attending the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions meeting in The Gambia.

During the meeting, both parties engaged in discussions on improving collaboration and strengthening democratic values.

Olumekun reiterated INEC’s dedication to maintaining neutrality, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law in carrying out its constitutional duties.
