Renowned South African actress Connie Chiume has passed away at the age of 72.
Chiume, known for her roles in “Black Panther” and “Wakanda Forever,” died on Tuesday at Garden City Hospital.
The family announced the heartbreaking news on Instagram, sharing that she had passed away at a hospital in Johannesburg. They also asked for privacy during this difficult time.
The statement read, “The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Connie Chiume, 72, passed away at Garden City Hospital today, August 6, 2024. The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. Further details will be communicated in due course.”
Born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa, Chiume began her acting career in the 1970s.
Her illustrious career spanned several decades, earning her acclaim both locally and internationally. In addition to her film work, Chiume was celebrated for her contributions to South African television and theatre.
She appeared in numerous local productions, including popular soap operas such as “Zone 14” and “Rhythm City,” captivating audiences with her compelling performances.
Her talent and dedication earned her numerous awards and nominations throughout her career. Chiume’s accolades include several prestigious honours for her roles in both television and film.
She received the South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Supporting Actress and was honoured with the Golden Horn Award for her outstanding contributions to the industry. Her role in “Black Panther” further solidified her place in cinematic history, bringing her international recognition.
Chiume gained fame through her roles in popular TV shows including “Mohlolohadi,” “Zone 14,” “Yizo Yizo,” “Rhythm City,” “Housekeepers,” and “Grassroots,” as well as the Marvel film “Black Panther.” She recently starred in the hit series “Gomora” and appeared in BeyoncĂ©’s film “Black Is King.”
