The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Kwara State chapter, on Monday carried out its threat to picket distribution companies over the new electricity tariff introduced by the Federal Government.
At the headquarters of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, in Ilorin, the gate was found under lock and key.
The leadership of the labour movement led by the state chairman, Comrade Saheed Murtala Olayinka, and his TUC counterpart, went round the headquarters of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and its sub-stations to effect their action.
In a chat with DAILY POST in Ilorin on Monday, Saheed described the action as effective and successful, adding: “We can’t say when we will end it”.
He said despite the early warning issued to the government by the labour congress to rescind the decision on the new electricity tariff among other unpopular policies slammed on the citizens of the country, no concrete solution or response has been provided.
“Hike in electricity tariff, petrol price among others have made life unbearable for the citizens particularly salary workers, we complained but government put a deaf ear to our complaints.”
The labour chairman lamented that the policies had impacted negatively on Nigerian workers.
To ensure the success of the picketing action, Saheed explained, “We decentralized our monitoring team to all the offices and sub-stations of the distribution company in the state capital.”
Efforts to reach the business manager of the company at Baboko Market, Ilorin, proved abortive while officials met at the office refused to speak to our correspondent.
