John Amamzalla, the Chairman of Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba State, has been dragged before the state High Court by a Civil Society Organization (CSO).
The chairman was alleged to have mobilized thugs to launch an attack on members of the group while on their way to the administrative headquarters of the council to sensitize the people on the dangers of deforestation.
The group, it would be recalled, were early this year met with strong opposition while attempting to gain entry into the council to enlighten the people on the need to always engage in tree planting.
Apart from the various degrees of injuries that were alleged to have been sustained by the members following the attack, their vehicle was also said to have been destroyed beyond recognition.
The case which was today brought before Justice Nuhu Adi was adjourned to 21 October, 2021, for ruling.
The adjournment was sequel to a request by the respondent for an out-of-court settlement.
Speaking with media practitioners shortly after the adjournment, counsel to the plaintiffs, Josiah Micah, said that his client’s fundamental rights have been infringed upon, hence the decision to approach a court for the interpretation of fundamental human rights accrued to his client.
Citing the law of Alternative Dispute Resolution” (ADR), he vowed to tread all relevant paths to ensure justice for his clients.
On the proposed out of court settlement, he promised to weigh the outcome of the resolution before reacting .
On his part, counsel for the defendant, Nerius Johnson, is hoping that the resolution would be worthwhile, stating that “nobody is against settlement.”
“In law, parties resolve their issues amicably and this case is not a unique one that can not be resolved amicably.”
