One person died after First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s motorcade was involved in an accident that occured between Lion’s Den and Chinhoyi late on Friday.
The person who died has been identified as an executive escort motorbike outrider from the ZRP. The outrider, also referred to as a biker, was leading the First Lady’s motorcade. He is reported to have died on the spot after a head-on collision with a Toyota Altezza. The driver of the Toyota is alleged to not have given way when the accident occured.
According to the online publication New Zimbabwe, the accident occured at a spot which is known as “PaJones” which is located between Lion’s Den and Chinhoyi. The First Lady was returning to the capital from Mhangura where she had gone to make some donations for her philanthropic organisation.
At the time the article was published, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told the publication that he did not know anything about the accident as he was yet to receive any reports from his subordinates. Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Margaret Chitove also said that she was yet to receive a report about an accident involving the First Lady’s motorcade.
In the last few months, the First Lady’s motorcade has been involved in a series of accidents, in which some of her security officials have lost their lives.
In April last year, the First Lady’s convoy was involved in a fatal accident in which one of her security officers died while 3 others were gravely injured in Muzarabani, Mashonaland Central province. The accident occured when one of the vehicles in the convoy overturned on a rocky embankment. The First Lady, who was on her way from offering assistance to the disadvantaged people living near Zimbabwe’s border with Mozambique, did not suffer any injuries.
A few months later, in July 2020, the First Lady’s motorcade was involved in another accident that saw her Toyota Land Cruiser overturning. The First Lady, who had been heading to Mazowe when the accident happened along the Harare-Bindura Road, escaped unhurt.
