In an effort to curtail the spread of Covid-19 in schools, the Government of Zimbabwe has okayed the alternating approach to learning that will see some pupils attending school for only two days per week to limit numbers as per the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
As schools are preparing to reopen for all classes tomorrow, the government saw it fit to introduce the two-day schooling per week to ensure that there is a limited number of pupils per class at a particular time.
According to the Standard Operating Procedures that were put in place to protect students and teachers from the Covid-19 pandemic , classes are not allowed to have more than 35 pupils.
Just like what was done last year, the alternating classes strategy will see some schools allowing pupils to only attend classes two days per week, spend three days learning from home, and then rotate in the following week.
Speaking during an interview with state media, the Director of communications and advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Taungana Ndoro confirmed the development saying the Covid-19 alternating classes was the best route to take to reduce the number of learners per class as guided by the SOPs.
He, however, emphasized that alternating and hot sitting classes are not applicable to every school as that depends on each individual school’s capacity.
In an effort to complement these alternating classes, the government is set to come up with a robust program of distance learning and cyberlearning.
Meanwhile, the vaccination of teachers is already underway, it started in Harare Province last week.
