Defiant party lovers across the country have vowed to defy the government ban on Christmas parties
This comes after the government effectively banned Christmas parties due to a second wave of the coronavirus which has been characterized by a huge spike in new infections.
Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe said that the police will be out in full force to enforce COVID-19 lockdown regulations this festive season as Zimbabwe is still not yet out of the woods.
“We are not yet out of the COVID-19 woes. The country is in the second wave of the virus. Parties will not be permissible during the festive season.”
“Weddings will be allowed but with limited numbers. Police will be out in full force to enforce COVID-19 regulations and make sure they are being followed,” he said.
December is a festive month which is characterized by weddings and parties countrywide. The move to ban Christmas parties rubbed many people the wrong way as they were looking forward to hosting parties as per the norm.
Some revellers and club owners who spoke to New Zimbabwe revealed that they are going to host Christmas parties and celebrate as they have always done every other Christmas, even if it means hosting bush parties.
“The police are incapacitated. They don’t have fuel to do normal policing duties, so how do you expect them to drive 20km out of town to stop a party?” said a club owner.
A partygoer said that the government ban on Christmas was not going to stop them from hosting parties this festive season. He revealed that it easy to circumvent the coronavirus lockdown by holding parties at tourism facilities such as hotels and bed and breakfast lodges.
You book a lodge for US$100 (about R1,450), invite around 20 friends, bring drinks and a good DJ. It’s even cheaper than spending at a nightclub,” he said.
