The November curse seems to be targeting those celebrating birthdays. Just a week after businessman Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure died in a horror car crash, four people also perished in a similar incident when a Mercedes Benz C200 collided head-on with a BMW X 5 near Kariba Airport on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Herald, the passengers of the Mercedes Benz C200 were celebrating the birthday of a female colleague and are believed to have bought some beers at Nyamhunga Shopping Centre before heading to the Airport Bar.
The birthday girl, only identified as Irene, is lucky to be alive as she did not join her colleagues after indicating that she wanted to attend another event before joining them.
While Irene’s friends were driving to the Airport Bar, intending to pick up her for the celebrations, tragedy struck.
Similar to Ginimbi’s accident, three passengers who were trapped in the vehicle were burnt beyond recognition when the Mercedes Benz burst into flames after colliding with the BMW.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations into the accident were ongoing. However, he said that they suspect overspeeding could have been the cause of the accident.
“We are still conducting investigations into what could have caused the accident, but preliminary findings point to speeding as the driver failed to negotiate a curve,” he said.
Police identified the deceased as Fortunate Dandajene (47), Jeremiah Matimbe (50), Charles Mandebvu (50), and Corporal Patience Ganni (31) of the Zimbabwe National Army.
Meanwhile, the other three passengers who were in the BMW X5 are in a more stable condition and are currently recovering at Kariba District Hospital.
