Randy New Zealanders have been hoarding not just loo roll but sex toys leading to a tripling of sales, according to the nation’s largest adult-themed retailer.
Kiwis raced online in their droves to snap up sex toys after Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern announced a month-long coronavirus lockdown of the country.
Adult Toy Megastore (ATM) said the restrictions left to a 48-hour buying bonanza, leading to a tripling of sales as New Zealander's faced a month or more of being stuck indoors.
ATM spokeswoman Emily Writes told The Guardian: “We’re selling a lot of beginner toys, all our beginner ranges are very popular.
“It definitely looks like people are saying: ‘I’ve got time, I might try something new’.”
Other sex products, including condoms and lubricant, also enjoyed a sales spike shortly after the Kiwi PM announced the lockdown.
Sales were also boosted in Australia and the UK, countries ATM also operates in, when their prime ministers announced similar lockdowns.
Ms Writes added: “Looking at what people were buying at that point it was all sex toys. It was like they were thinking, ‘we can’t go to bars, we can’t pick up, we can’t go on dates’.”
