Meghan's father Thomas tells of 'pride' at becoming a grandfather

Meghan Markle's father has expressed pride at his daughter giving birth to a healthy baby boy today after the 74-year-old was snubbed in the Royal announcement.

Prince Harry confirmed the birth of his firstborn this afternoon after his wife was more than a week overdue.

Ex-Hollywood lighting director Thomas Markle has congratulated the new parents, saying 'God bless this child' after keeping a low profile in recent weeks. He said he hoped the child would serve with 'grace, dignity and honour'.

The 74-year-old said in a statement: 'I'm delighted to hear that mother and child are doing well.

'I am proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I am sure that he will grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honour.

'GOD bless the child and I wish him health and happiness, and my congratulations to my lovely daughter Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, and GOD save the Queen.'

He has kept out of the public eye following his rift with the Duke and Duchess, which hit headlines in May last year as the couple were about to marry in Windsor.

Today's official announcement from the palace failed to mention Mr Markle, who is at home in Rosarito, New Mexico. It  did mention her mother, Doria, who is with Meghan at her and Harry's new home in Windsor.

The statement read: 'Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 0526hrs. The baby weighs 7lbs 3oz. The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth.

'The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.

'The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.'
