Mick and Jayney Clark claim they are stranded in Agios Georgios on the popular island destination of Corfu with no running water as they cannot afford to fly home early.
The couple, from Cranbrook in Devon, paid £499 for the inclusive two-week break with TUI after spotting a Facebook post they said looked 'too good to be true'.
Upon their arrival on Friday, their suspicions proved correct, as they shared shocking photographs of the resorts beaches and local amenities overflowing with garbage.
Former soldier Mr Clark has even claimed that the village resembles war-torn Bosnia, where he served in 1994.
Jayney, 50, said: 'Mick said this place resembles war torn Bosnia in 1994 when he served in the Bosnian conflict. They might as well have sent us self-catering to Beirut.
'I'm not kidding, that's what it looks like - they might as well have packed us off to Libya or Syria for a week.'
Mrs Clark, who suffers from a rare blood disorder, now claims the stress 'has flared up' her symptoms and is making her ill.
They are unable to leave the resort early due to the flight costs, with the couple struggling for cash after Mrs Clark quit a PA job last year due to her illness.
Mrs Clark added: 'Other guests are paying £200 each to get a flight home today. That's how bad this place is.
'Two girls from Cheshire arrived at the same time as us and they were so upset they paid for their own flights home.'
The couple said they are waiting for answers from TUI, but a '24/7 helpline to a UK number actually puts you through to Portugal and India'.
Mrs Clark added: 'When we saw this Facebook post about a £499 all inclusive holiday flying from Exeter our first thought was "it's too good to be true" so we went into Hays Travel in Topsham and asked "what's the catch; why is it so cheap?"
