Only Nigerians who see the legislative branch as an independent arm of government designed to serve the interest of the people should be elected as legislators.
Mr. Austine Osatohanmwen Osaghae, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) candidate for Uhunmwode constituency in the March 9, 2019 Edo State House of Assembly election, who stated this during a stakeholders’ meeting, said the duty of the legislature is also to act as a check on the executive arm.
“Unfortunately in our state, this has not been the case. This is why the many who have represented Uhunmwode over time have not delivered on their pledges; that explains the underdevelopment of the constituency despite all the big names from here,” he posited.
Osaghae assured the people of his constituency of a new direction with an ADP lawmaker come June this year.
He said they should all turn out en masse on Saturday to elect a person like him, who knows the duties of the legislative branch.
Osaghae blamed the plight of the legislative branch in the country on long years of dictatorship, which he said, saw the military combining the executive and legislative functions, adding that this has served to stifle its development over time.
”The problem we have in Nigeria is that it is the executive that decides who should become a legislator during elections.
“That is why we have legislators, who see their duties as doing the bidding of the executive rather than representing the people, who voted them into office,” he said.
On what people should expect from him if he got elected on March 9, 2019, Osaghae, an engineer by training, said his first 100 days in office would be spent lobbying his colleagues to support a bill for the building of a General Hospital at Ehor, the Uhunwonde council headquarters.
“Legislative business involves lobbying my colleagues and the executive to get what is good for the people who sent me to the state Assembly.
“Everybody knows that it is only Ehor of the 18 local council headquarters in Edo State that has been denied a General Hospital. So I intend to change that once I am sworn in,” he added.
