Liam Neeson once revealed he was 'dying to stab somebody' in a fascinating insight into the thinking of the race row Hollywood star.
In a biography, Neeson admitted to the fury he sometimes feels bubbling beneath the surface while trying to appear like 'a normal human being'.
It comes as the Hollywood star, 66, sparked controversy when he disclosed how he had walked the streets armed with a cosh, hoping he would be approached by 'a black b*****d' so he could kill him.
He said he was compelled by a 'primal' and 'medieval' desire for revenge in response to the rape of a friend who said her attacker was black, but has denied being racist.
The actor shared the personal story as he promoted his new film Cold Pursuit, which sees his character Nels Coxman go on a journey to kill.
But years earlier Neeson – whose life has been marred by tragedy - gave another disturbing insight into how his mind works when he said deep inside he suppressed a desire to stab someone as he promoted his 1990 blockbuster, 'Darkman'.
Drawing parallels with himself and his character, the actor said: 'He's always suppressing something, trying to quell the raging beast within. I can relate to that.
'You know, you're sitting at a restaurant table or in a traffic jam or waiting for an elevator, and there's an outward side of you that has to present itself as a normal human being. But inside you're dying to stab somebody. Especially here in Los Angeles.'
Revealing his darker side to journalist Ingrid Millar for her 1995 biography, the Schindler's List actor went on: 'It was great to know that this guy really could lose his temper.
He has some secret the world doesn't know, this terrible, unbelievable rage. 'He wants to keep it harnessed, but sometimes he loses that battle. I felt real empathy for the guy'.
He added: 'It was a real acting challenge. I had to maintain a rage, yet hold on to some control and contain certain emotions. I was faced with trying to project the emotions I was trying to protect.'
The actor sparked fury when he revealed that he had spent 'maybe a week' looking for a 'black b*****d' to kill after a loved one was raped by a black man.
The New York premier of his new film was cancelled after he told The Independent he had spent the time walking near pubs with a heavy stick and 'hoping some 'black b*****d' would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could ... kill him.'
