Kaduna Man Arraigned For Allegedly Beating Up Neighbour's Wife To A Pulp

A 35-year-old man, Gabriel Elijah, was on Thursday arraigned before a Barnawa Customary Court, Kaduna, for allegedly beating his neighbour’s wife to a pulp.

Elijah, a resident of the Barnawa Complex area of Kaduna State, is standing trial for a charge of assault.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 27, 2018, at his residence.

Leo said that Amaka Chinoso of the same address as the defendant reported the matter at the Barnawa Police Station, Kaduna, on the same date.

According to him, the defendant and the complainant had a misunderstanding, which led to the former beating the latter until she fell unconscious.

The prosecutor said that the complainant was saved by neighbours, who were at home.



The case was subsequently reported to the police, which led to the arrest of the defendant. 


When asked to take a plea, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 240 of the Penal Code.

The judge, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed, with evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the case till January 15, 2019, for further hearing.
