Iceland Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson Quits After World Cup Exit

The Football Association of Iceland have confirmed that Heimir Hallgrimsson has left his position as head coach.

Heimir Hallgrimsson helped Iceland to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship in 2016 and have just participated at the World Cup for the first time in their history

However, after registering just one point from games with Argentina, Nigeria and Croatia, Hallgrimsson has opted to step down from his role with immediate effect.

A statement on social media read: “The FA of Iceland can now confirm that Heimir Hallgrimsson will not continue as head coach of the Icelandic men´s national team.


“Hallgrimsson steps down as Iceland coach at his own request after 7 years in the job, having joined in 2011.”

Despite losing two out of their three matches at the World Cup, Hallgrimsson’s men managed an impressive 1-1 draw with Argentina.

When Heimir Hallgrimsson is  not screaming orders from the sidelines he works as a part-time dentist.

The 51-year-old who works in his local town of Vedstmannaeyjay, is so respected that he even has a beer named after him in Iceland.
