Prince Louis will be christened next month by Archbishop of Canterbury at The Chapel Royal

Prince Louis of Cambridge's christening will take place on July 9, Kensington Palace announced today.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's youngest child, born on April 23, will be baptised in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace in London.

The palace said: 'The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to announce that the christening of Prince Louis will take place on Monday 9th July at The Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, London.

'Prince Louis will be christened by The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby.'

Eight-week-old Louis, a younger brother to Prince George and Princess Charlotte, is fifth in line to the throne and a great-grandchild of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

George was also christened in the Chapel Royal, but Charlotte was baptised at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham.

The Queen is head of the Church of England and Louis's father William will one day take on this role when he becomes king.

George's christening at the same venue of The Chapel Royal in October 2013 was an intimate occasion, with only 23 guests attending.

He was on his best behaviour, blowing bubbles beforehand and being quiet and peaceful afterwards.

Charlotte's baptism in 2015 involved the Cambridge family walking to church past well-wishers.

George held William's hand, while baby Charlotte was pushed by Kate in a vintage pram, previously used for two of the Queen's children.

The baby prince, who will be 11 weeks old at the time of the christening, will be welcomed into the Christian faith dressed in the same frilly, cream gown used for George and Charlotte.

The robe is a replica of the intricate lace and satin dress made for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter in 1841.

The baptism will be a private affair, lasting around 30 minutes.

Prince Louis's godparents will be expected to be announced on the morning of the christening, with William and Kate again likely to choose mostly close friends for the role.

Newlyweds the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are likely to attend the family celebration.

Ahead of her wedding, Meghan was herself christened and confirmed in the Chapel Royal by the Archbishop, who also married the couple last month.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Middletons will also be expected to attend Louis's big day.
