POLICE are said to be investigating claims that a fund aimed at raising money to privately prosecute Madeleine McCann’s parents is a fraud.
A Facebook user set up a GoFundMe page claiming he wanted to raise £1.5million for legal action against Kate and Gerry.
Supporters had pledged nearly £20,000 by this morning – with one generous donation of £10,000.
But the Daily Star reports that police are now investigating the page is fraudulent.
Other internet users branded Adam Cruz’s webpage a “scam” and questioned where the money would be going.
Adam writes on the page: “I am raising funds to bring a private prosecution against the parents of Madeleine McCann.”
He adds: “Lets deliver the justice that Madeline McCann deserves.”
The page has since disappeared from the GoFundMe website.
In September Kate and Gerry were handed fresh hope in the search for their daughter after receiving £100,000 of government money.
The police inquiry – which has already cost taxpayers millions – was due to end as funding ran out.
But a request for more cash, which was submitted to the Home Office, has now been signed off.
Earlier this month we reported how the cop who previously accused Maddie’s parents of faking her abduction is set to release a second controversial book targeting the involvement of British police.
Goncalo Amaral has almost finished his second book, but although it is expected to centre around the 2008 disappearance of Maddie in Algarave, Portugal, it is unclear what details the author will release.
