30,000 Ex-Militants Will Start Receiving Stipends From Today

At least 30,000 former militants In Niger Delta will start receiving their stipends as from today (Monday), Brig-Gen. Paul Boroh (retd), the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, said on Sunday.

This is even as he pleaded with the ex-militants in the region to shelve the planned protests scheduled to hold today.

Speaking on Boroh’s behalf, the Head of the Media and Communication Department of the office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Abuja, Mr. Piriye Keyaramo, in a statement, revealed that federal government is aware of the challenges faced by the ex-militants.


The coordinator, who expressed concern over the plight of the ex-agitators in respect of the delay in the payment of their stipends, explained that President Muhammandu Buhari appreciated their patience and the challenges were being addressed.

The statement read: “President Buhari attaches so much importance to the Amnesty Programme, which explains why the President in his inaugural address to the nation specifically promised to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place for the ex-agitators in the region.”

The statement also said that the Federal Government planned to improve the amnesty programme for the benefit of the 30,000 ex-militants and other youths in the region.

“President Muhammandu Buhari, is already putting together a youth development and empowerment package that would directly impact the ex-agatators and other youths in the region,” he said.
