#Edo Assembly elects Okonoboh new speaker - TG

Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie stepped down yesterday for the member representing Igueben constituency, Justin Okonoboh.

The change of guard was made to balance the political equation in the state as Ativie is from Edo South Senatorial District where the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Godwin Obaseki hails from, with his running mate; Philip Shaibu coming from Edo North. This leaves no position for Edo Central.

The leadership change was put in motion by the Majority Leader, Foly Ogedengbe, Owan East, which was seconded by Chris Okaeben, Oredo East.

Ogedengbe said the change was effected following the endorsement of 18 members of the House.
Okonoboh immediately assumed the position of the House Speaker, while Ativie became the Deputy Speaker.

Ogedengbe explained that the development is to ensure all senatorial zones of the state are represented.

Giving his acceptance speech, Okonoboh announced that the chairmanship of the house committees remains and urged members to use the period of adjournment to complete their oversight assignments.
