Thousands of Momentum supporters have rallied in support of Labour's beleagured Jeremy Corbyn amid new calls for him to step aside.
Sources have told Sky News that a group of freshly appointed shadow cabinet ministers attempted to see the leader to urge him to resign, to prevent a split in the party.
It is also understood that the party rebels are trying to avoid a formal leadership contest, as 60,000 new members have joined this week further bolstering Mr Corbyn's position.
The surge has apparently been driven by a campaign to protect the Islington MP.
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell on Friday urged those agitating for a change at the top after the result of the referendum to "calm down".
