Roy Hodgson apologises to fans after #England failure but tells reporters: 'I don't know why I'm here'

Roy Hodgson has apologised to England fans for the national team's failure - but told reporters: "I don't know why I'm here."

The Three Lions were unceremoniously dumped out of Euro 2016 by minnows Iceland on Monday night and Hodgson immediately announced his resignation at full-time.

After initially refusing to take questions from the media following his departure speech, he faced the press after being accused of dodging the media.

Hodgson later clarified that he had not been forced to address the reporters.

He said: "I wasn’t forced to come. I don’t think it’s necessary.

“I was not forced to come here. I did so as I’ve never shirked a press conference, never run away, always been here these four years.

“I maintain I’m unhappy as it’s no longer my job and so much is going to be written that nothing I can say will do anything other than fuel the flames and I have no magic answer.

“I’m here because this is my last day in the job and wish my successors well.

“And I’m here to thank you because in the four years, I’ve been fairly treated and have no complaints.”
