A legal adviser has lambasted ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo for calling a Federal High Court judge stupid, Pulse reports.
Kolawole Olaniyon, Legal Adviser for the International Secretariat of Amnesty International, London, criticized Obasanjo for his utterances against Justice Mohammed Idris, saying that his sentiments were inappropriate.
Obasanjo is alleged to have lashed out at Idris following a ruling ordering all past state leaders to account for loot recovered from Sani Abacha.
"They said the money recovered from Abacha, I should account for it. What stupidity! The man who asked for it, the man who gave the judgment or who answered them are all stupid, with due respect," Obasanjo was quoted as saying, according to Punch.
While Olaniyon agreed that Obasanjo had a right to voice his opinion on the matter, he claimed that such utterances could jeopardize the judge's independence and integrity.
Olaniyon stated that Nigerians have a right to hold their leaders accountable while keeping their channels of information open, thereby rendering Obasanjo's sentiments misplaced.
