#German envoy warns #Zambia over political violence

German ambassador to Zambia, Bernd Finke, has expressed alarm over the increasing political violence that has gripped the southern African country, according to Zambia Reports.

Finke warned that the continued violence was harming the country's image as a peaceful nation, adding that this would negatively affect foreign investment and tourism.

He also called on all political parties to discourage, and not engage in, violence during the election period.

Zambia is set to go to the polls on August 11.

Reports indicated that the opposition had in the past months been brutally attacked by security personnel.

A video of a Zambian opposition member being stripped naked in full view of police officers went viral on social media in recent months.

Legendary jazz artist Dorothy Masuka recently criticised Zambia’s state of affairs, saying "something has terribly gone wrong" in that country.

Masuka, 80, said that the "new generation was in a mess", as political violence had taken root in the country, ahead of the August 11 presidential elections.
