A restaurant has gone viral after it shared online a touching note - and very generous tip - left by a customer.
The Breakfast Spot posted a receipt on its Facebook page on which a diner had left the server a life-affirming message.
The venue, in Cohoes, New York, praised the feel-good tale , and it's got hundreds of shares so far.
At the top of the receipt, written in pen, it reads: "Life is short, a friend of mine died last night. Please enjoy a night with someone you love!"
The receipt for the $22.08 meal - around £15 - was rounded up to $100 (£68), giving a tip of about £53.
It was captioned: "This is the kind of stuff you only read online, but it happened this morning in our restaurant from a loyal customer."
They added: "Congratulations to our server Becky, and a big special thanks to our customer's generosity."
Waitress Becky Nielsen wrote on her Facebook profile: "A young woman left this tip for me today and I've been on the verge of tears ever since.
"Her friend must have been a lovely person to inspire generosity in the wake of tragedy. Go hug your friends, everyone."
Facebook commenters on the venue's page love the gesture, calling it "so kind and generous".
Diner customer Robert McCrea added praise for Becky, saying she "is a great girl and we love having her as our waitress when we go to the Breakfast Spot!
"Sorry to this person who lost a love one but it shows we still have extremely nice and considerate people in this world. Great job."
"This is amazing.," added Karen Clark Romanow. Sounds as if this should become one of those 'pay it forward' moments."
