A DAD is in a coma in hospital after plunging from a balcony on the first night out of his Spanish holiday.

Father-of-two Andrew Phillips, 25, was found sprawled on the lawn by hotel staff, having suffered severe head injuries after hitting the ground head first.

The bricklayer, from Newport, Wales, is father to five-year-old son Rylee and baby stepdaughter Sadie.

He had just checked into his room at the hotel with his mates when he fell from the first floor balcony.

His family have flown out to be at his bedside after doctors noticed a bleed to his brain and put him into an induced coma.

Mr Phillips's mother Joanne, 45, said her son was in a 'serious' but non-life threatening condition and that his father had flown out to be with him.

She said: "We don't know what exactly the situation is.

"He's in an induced coma and has multiple fractures.

"It's his head and face - his body is fine."

"I don't even think he had even been there 10 hours.

"As soon as it happened his friend phoned his dad who phoned me.

"I was in shock with it all.

"It's not something you expect to hear.

"It's not very good at all.

"We are waiting to see what happens now in the next few days."

Andrew's condition is being closely monitored by doctors in hospital.

Local police are probing the incident but say there is nothing at this stage to indicate that a crime had taken place.

The incident came just hours after it was reported that a British teenager had almost drunk himself to death after downing 75 shots.

Cameron Relf, 18, accepted the challenge of drinking the potentially deadly quantity of Sambuca and caramel vodka on the party strip.

He said: "We had been up for a really large night out – but that's what you do in Magaluf.

"The shot girls just kept getting us to drink more."

Magaluf has recently cracked down on drunken antics with officials announcing a plan to introduce €3,000 (£2,182) fines to anyone being caught naked in the streets.

Bans on alcohol in the street between 10pm and 8am have also been put in place.
