Thugs in #Rotherham chop off end of man’s finger in suspected #race attack

Police in the South Yorkshire town have stepped up patrols amid fears of Islamophobic violence after the child abuse scandal which shook the town

Police in Rotherham are investigating a suspected race-hate attack after an Asian man was assaulted with a meat cleaver.

The 31-year-old man was set upon at a BP petrol station by two men and the top of his finger was chopped off.

There has been a big increase in race attacks in Rotherham since a shocking report revealed 1,400 girls had been sexually exploited by gangs mainly of Pakistani heritage.

Since that 2014 report, children as young as five are said to have been racially abused in the town with a tenfold increase in hate crimes.

The latest attack took place just before 6am on Saturday morning.

A statement from South Yorkshire Police said: "Police received a report that a 31-year-old Asian man had been attacked at the BP service station on Herringthorpe Valley Road in the Herringthorpe area of Rotherham.

"It was reported that the man had been dropped off by a taxi to use the cash machine at the garage when he was approached by two unknown men.

"The two men then left the scene in a dark coloured vehicle.

"The victim was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains in a stable condition.

"The first man is described as white, of tall, slim build. The victim was unable to provide a description of the second man."

Leading the investigation Detective Inspector Richard Partridge said: "This is an extremely nasty attack which appears to be unprovoked and is being treated as racially aggravated.

"A full investigation is underway and as well as reviewing CCTV , we have a team of detectives in the area and officers are supporting the victim.

"The incident is being taken extremely seriously and we can reassure members of the community that we are following a number of lines of enquiry to identify these offenders.
