Man, 20, arrested after bodies of two women found in house where a 'lady lives alone with her little dog'

A YOUNG man has been arrested after the bodies of two women were discovered in a house where a "lady lives alone with her little dog".

Police and paramedics were called to a property in Station Road in Shirebrook, near Mansfield, Derbyshire, shortly after 10pm on Friday.

The two bodies were found inside, Derbyshire Constabulary said. The arrested man, 20, is from Sheffield.

One neighbour said she understood one of the victims to be a woman in her late seventies or eighties.

A woman in her 50s lives alone at the Victorian semi detached property where the bodies were found, neighbours said.

One local person described the occupant as a "lovely lady" who dotes on her small pet dog.

Mother-of-four Amanda Nagy, 38, who lives next to where the bodies were found, said:"The lady who lives there is the perfect neighbour. She has a little dog called Izzy which she absolutely adores.

"We only know her as Julie. She is brilliant with my kids. The kids and their friends are always in our garden on the trampoline, but despite the noise Julie never complains.

"The kids love her. Last Halloween she gave them all lots of chocolate.

"She's a very well turned out lady, polite and well-spoken. She never has a bad word for anybody.

"She's just spent lots of money on a new kitchen and a fancy patio in her garden. She's very house-proud."

A force spokesman said: "An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the discovery, but the deaths are being treated as suspicious.

"A 20-year-old man was arrested earlier today and remains in police custody."

A man who works at a nearby business said police and forensics officers were "everywhere" on Station Road near the junction of Hardwick Street.
